Getting early and regular prenatal care improves the chances of a healthy pregnancy. This care can begin even before pregnancy with a preconception care visit to a health care provider. Its goal is to provide regular check-ups that allow doctors to treat and prevent potential health problems throughout the course of the pregnancy and to promote healthy lifestyles that benefit both mother and child. This includes develop a plan for their reproductive life, increase their daily intake of folic acid (Vitamin-B9) to at least 400 micrograms, make sure their immunization status is up to date, control diabetes, hypertension and other medical conditions if any.. For a healthy pregnancy, your doctor will probably want to see you on the following recommended schedule of prenatal visits: Weeks 4 to 28: 1 prenatal visit a month. Weeks 28 to 36: 1 prenatal visit every 2 weeks. Weeks 36 to 40: 1 prenatal visit every week. If you did not meet with your health care provider before your were pregnant, your first prenatal visit will generally be around 8 weeks after your LMP (last menstrual period).
